Cape Town is becoming increasingly health focussed with vegan restaurants popping up all over the city.
Kind Café, Spirit Café and Whole Earth is to name but a few. I stumbled across Scheckter’s Raw when a health-conscious friend treated me to lunch in Sea Point. As a meat lover, I was not fond of the idea of eating leaves, seeds and fruits for lunch, but oh boy I was pleasantly surprised.
As a novice to the health food scene, I barely knew any of the ingredients or items on the menu. The friendly waiter suggested the “Best Vegan Burger” to me and the “Zen Bowl” to my friend.
This vegan, vegetarian and organic restaurant serves plant-based food, cold-pressed juices, organic coffees and nutritional treats.
I was amazed by the modern presentation and taste of the dishes, especially seeing that I was out of my comfort zone. This was a serious wake-up call for me as I now know that it is possible to eat delicious healthy food.
Another brilliant idea from the owner Toby Scheckter is the information relating to each menu item. For instance, the Best Vegan Burger: “It takes 660 gallons of water to make 1 beef burger. That’s the equivalent of 32 showers”. These interesting facts caught my attention and my overall impression of the restaurant was that I had to go back to try the other items on the menu.
Last weekend I went back for breakfast and yet again I was pleasantly surprised. I decided on the Pumpkin Pie Flapjacks.
The public started streaming in and soon all the seats were occupied. Joggers came to buy the Immune Boosting shot and drank it whilst standing and left. The small bottle contained ginger, lemon, turmeric, apple and cayenne pepper. This is one of the best sellers of Scheckter’s at only R40.
The ambiance of the restaurant was relaxed, yet energetic and sets the tone for friends and family to enjoy a nutritious meal in the vibey neighbourhood of Sea Point in Cape Town, merely one block from the beach.
I might not become a vegan anytime soon, but I definitely become a regular at here.
